SPARWOOD

A close-knit Elk Valley town built for the mountains — and home to the world's biggest truck

Sparwood was purpose- initially built in 1939as a small residential settlement for mine managers, and it was later expanded and incorporated as a district municipality in 1966, bringing together residents from the nearby communities of Michel, Natal, and Middletown into one new town. Today it's home to just under 4,000 people — and to the Terex Titan, once the largest truck in the world, a 350-tonne-payload giant still parked proudly by the highway for everyone to see.

Outdoor Life, Year-Round

World-class skiing is just 30 minutes away, but Sparwood has plenty of its own to offer — a local golf course, hiking and biking trails through the surrounding mountains, and some of the best canoeing and kayaking on the Elk River anywhere in the valley. The community recreation centre rounds things out with a saltwater pool and fitness facilities for year-round use.

Community & Landmarks

Sparwood's most famous resident isn't a person — it's the Terex Titan, a massive 1974 dump truck that has to be seen in person to be believed. Titan Park hosts the town's Friday-afternoon Farmers Market through the summer, with local produce, baked goods, and live music drawing the community together.

Where People Live

Sparwood's housing mix leans toward easy, low-maintenance living — apartments, condos, and townhomes alongside single-family homes and a few well-established mobile home communities, all within a compact, walkable town.
